Bird Feeder Craft Project for Kids

Empty toilet paper rolls are probably one of the most versatile and useful craft supplies.  You’ll find tons of inspiring and brilliant ways to put them to use, and get your kiddo to create everything from DIY pencil holders to cute cartoon characters and more! 

Here’s yet another activity that uses an empty toilet paper roll- this time, to make a bird feeder. This can be an excellent project you could get your little one involved in when he’s bored, or when you’re trying to get him a bit closer to nature, or discover more about bird life around him.

Supplies for Bird feeder craft project for kids:

• Toilet paper roll
• Small bowl of natural peanut butter
• Plastic knife
• Thick string (about 12” long)
• Paper plate
• Small bowl of bird seeds 
• Scissors
• Long Stick (about 10’-12” long) 

Directions: 

Set the toilet paper roll in a vertical position. 

Using the plastic knife, spread a thick layer of peanut butter onto the toilet paper roll. If the peanut butter is too thin, the seeds will not stick well. (Note: The toilet paper roll may absorb some of the oils from the peanut butter. This is normal and ok.) 

Pour the bird seeds onto the paper plate and spread out evenly.

Gently roll the toilet paper roll tube around in the seeds and try to get as many as you can to stick to the peanut butter. Use your hands to pick up and place seeds onto areas that don’t get covered well. 

Run a string through the holes of the toilet paper tube. Bring the two ends together at the top and tie the string into a knot. 

Place the stick through the tube of the toilet paper roll. Tip: to get the stick to ‘stick’ well, you can place a small amount of peanut butter inside the tube and place the stick on top of the peanut butter.

Your bird feeder is ready to be placed out in a location for the birds! 

Consider placing your feeder in/near branches of a tree.

That’s pretty much it. Now all your little one has to do is wait for the little visitors to come, and watch them! 

This is another excellent activity that engages your kiddo’s senses. Plus, you can also take it up a notch by encouraging your little one to try and identify the birds that come, note them down in a book, along with the sounds they make, their colors etc. For the ones you both can’t identify, you can use the internet for support. 

Another great idea is to try making different bird feeders with different seeds, and note if this attracts different types of birds.
