June Read Aloud Book Recommendations

I know some of you are already in summer mode, but I know there are still some teachers holding down the fort in the classroom. I wanted to make sure you had some read aloud recommendations for the month of June.

These read alouds are light-hearted, perfect for summer and are great for taking outside to read under a shady tree! Your students will love them, they’ll sit for them and you can take a sigh of relief knowing that you’re one day closer to the last day of school.

What Pet Should I Get? by Dr. Seuss

I love a good Dr. Seuss book. After you read this book to your students, you might have them wondering what kind of pet they’d like. This would make for a great creative write at the end of the year. I’m all about keeping my students writing up until the end!

And Then Comes Summer by Tom Brenner

Summer is on the horizon and you can almost taste it. This book has a lyrical flow to it, and can be used for cause/effect as well. Students will learn about all the exciting things they can do when summer comes! The text focuses on being outside during the summer, which is so important for our students.

The Night Before Summer Vacation by Natasha Wing

If you’re looking for a fun “series” of books, the Night Before books are some of the best. In this story, a little girl and her family are packing for summer vacation and they don’t want to forget anything. Students will love trying to predict what it is that the family forgets!

Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall

I love this story and the lesson it teaches students are being brave and taking a risk. Jabari is getting ready to dive into the pool but he’s stalling. He’s scared. Students will love relating to this character as he overcomes his fear and will serve as a great discussion starter.

The Flag Keeper by Stacy Juba

This is a perfect read if you’re going to be in school on Flag Day. This book is a great way to teach them proper care and respect for the American flag. The flag keeper in the story has the responsibility to raise the flag each morning and take it down every night. Students will also learn all about flag etiquette. There are also some neat flag facts in the back of the book!

No More Pencils, No More Books, No More Teacher’s Dirty Looks! by Diane deGroat

I’ve recommended a few “Gilbert” books in the past, so if your students loved those, you’ll want to check this one out. In this story, the end of the school year is nearing and Gilbert’s teacher is getting ready to hand out students awards. This would be a perfect opener for you if you hand out awards to your students at the end of the year. It’s always a fun way to celebrate and commemorate an amazing year together!
