Marshmallow STEM Activities – Build a Cube

STEM activities are the best way to keep your child busy and occupied, and at the same time, nourish their curious soul and help to learn so much about the world around them. Building activities can help shape and improve your child’s fine motor skills, among other benefits.

You might be on the hunt for such STEM activities that help foster learning, but let’s get real for a moment- a lot of them do require a ton of effort and prep, and possibly even intervention and time from your end- not the ideal scenario right?

If that sounds relatable, here’s a bit of help your way. Here’s a fun and interesting STEM building activity that needs just 2 supplies (both of which we’re sure you probably already have in your kitchen), and minimal supervision from your end. Plus, this is perfect for when your toddler is hit by the boredom spell and is looking for a good hands on project to dig into!

Ready to give it a shot? It’s super simple too. Here’s how you can get started on this version of these marshmallow STEM activities!

Supplies:

Marshmallow Stem Activities
  • 8 Marshmallows (the more the better though, especially if you want to get your kid to try making different shapes too)
  • 12 Toothpicks

Directions for Marshmallow STEM Activities:

(The marshmallows will be the vertices and the toothpicks will form the sides of the cube.)

Attach four marshmallows and toothpicks to form a horizontal square.

Place a toothpick vertically from each marshmallow and form sides with the toothpicks.

This marshmallow STEM building activity can be a fun way to keep your toddler busy for a while, help him learn how to construct a cube from scratch (perfect for LEGO and construction toy lovers) and also has a bit of sensory play included (thanks to the fluffy marshmallows).

Marshmallow Stem Activities

STEM activities have, time and time again, found to help kids develop problem solving skills and at the same time, learn how to innovate.

What’s more, you can also take this up a notch and help your toddler create different shapes using the same technique- let him take charge and do it himself. It can be a great open ended play technique that doesn’t even need you to invest in expensive toys and engineering kits- great for the mom who’s trying to practise frugal living too!

When introduced at an early age, STEM activities can help your toddler learn how to innovate, create and understand how different things work together. It is also an excellent way to spark his interest in science and technology and help him develop critical thinking skills!

And if you’re on the hunt for another fun STEM activity to keep your toddler busy with, don’t forget to check out this one!
