Easy Colorful Ice Activity For Kids

Whether it is a warm summer morning or a dull and dark day- as a mom to a toddler, you’re probably hunting for yet another exciting and fun activity to keep him busy, and at the same time, help him learn and discover something new. 

This colorful ice activity can be an excellent one to get started on. It is simple and easy, needs just a few supplies, and you don’t even need to put in a lot of prep time into it. 

If you have some ice cube trays, some food coloring and kitchen essentials, you’re pretty much covered. 

Ready to give it a try? Here’s what you will need, and how you can do it! 

Supplies for Colorful Ice:

• Ice tray
• Water
• Food coloring (red, blue, yellow, green)
• Large tray
• 11 in. X 14 in. white Poster board (optional)
• Paper towels (about 2-3 sheets)
• Plastic Spoon 

Directions:

Pour water into the ice tray. Do not overfill or colors may run into other sections.

Add 1-2 drops of food coloring to each section.

Place the ice tray in the freezer and freeze the ice completely.

Place the poster board into the large tray. 

Place the paper towel on top of the poster board. 

Take the frozen ice out of the freezer. 

Empty the ice tray onto the paper towel.

Use the spoon to spread the ice around. The ice will start to melt and leave colors on the paper towel.

Color all of the paper towel until no white space is left.

The paper towels should have a tie-dye effect! 

See if you have a fun design on your poster board underneath the paper towel and display! 

There’s actually so many ways you can put these colored ice cubes to use! If you’re looking to strengthen your kid’s fine motor skills, you can get him to pick up ice cubes of a particular color (say red) using a plastic spoon and scoop it out from one bowl to another. 

If you’re teaching your toddler about colors, you can also get him to put two different colored ice cubes together and watch how when they melt and their water mixes together, it turns into a different color. 

And if your kid loves this activity, you can also consider picking up ice cube trays in different shapes and sizes to make it even more fun. And guess what? If you take this activity outside- on the patio or in the lawn, it can be even more fun (and less messy obviously). Your little one will get to spend a lot of time splashing, exploring and learning, and of course, this gives you the chance to lie down and relax for a while while he’s at it.
