Do you have students who become nervous during math instruction? I’m sure you do! Sadly, students often become anxious when working with numbers. However, this shouldn’t be the case! Students will work with numbers throughout their entire lives. So, they need to see that numbers are fun and exciting versus scary and overwhelming. A great way to build a love of numbers involves using 2nd-grade math games. When students have math games for second grade, learning about operations and numbers becomes natural. Thankfully, there are plenty of options to ensure students love second-grade math instruction!
War Math Games: Regrouping
This is the perfect game to work on 2-digit addition with regrouping! Students become so absorbed in the game that they forget they are practicing math skills. Honestly, this is one of the best ways to help students overcome a fear of math!
While playing, this game also builds collaboration! The game requires 2 to 4 players so students can socialize, work together, and support classmates. They will deal out the cards face down and flip over their top card. The winner is whoever has the largest answer. However, if the cards are equivalent, it’s time for WAR! There is so much excitement in the classroom when this happens!
Since regrouping is challenging, each card does have a label for the answer key. This helps every student know they have extra support if they need it. Plus, the cards are perfect for a matching or concentration game for added versatility.
Students will master regrouping ones into tens with math games for second grade!
Be sure to check out War Math Games: Without Regrouping! This is a great way to help students master addition math facts and transition to adding 2-digit numbers. Teachers can progress to regrouping whenever students are ready.
War Games: Addition and Subtraction
As students master addition, they are ready for subtraction! Thankfully, math games for second grade will be a fantastic transition to adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. There are even cards for adding and subtracting with zeros.
Like the above games, students work in collaborative groups of 2 to 4 players. Best of all, students can play War, Memory, or Concentration with the same deck of cards!
Be sure to check out 2-Digit Addition and Subtraction Without Regrouping! Students will gain confidence in addition and subtraction without regrouping and finding the missing number!
Honestly, 2nd grade math games transform instruction in the classroom! They allow students to have fun without realizing how much learning is occurring as they play. Thankfully, all of the math games for second grade are versatile enough to work in all classrooms! The ability to play multiple games and print cards for review, homework, and stations makes them the perfect resource. Students will love having a consistent item to work with as their knowledge soars.
