Make a Book Center | Build a Story | Illustration Station

Description

This “Create a Book” or “Illustration Station” center will save you time, allow students to gradually become independent writers, and teaches the writing process. It is differentiated according to students’ needs and interests.

What’s included:

• 3 A Stories
• 3 B Stories
• 3 C Stories
• Stories 1-18 (middle and advanced stories)
• 3 Posters

Story A,B,C = Beginning Kindergarten Students

Story #1-#6 = Kindergarten and First Graders

Story #7-#18 = 2nd-3rd (Advanced) Writing their OWN stories.

You will have to MODEL this process for the children a couple of times, and then watch them take off on their own for the entire school year with no help or very little from you. It covers opinion, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing.

How it works:

Step 1: Print all the pages out and have them laminated. If students have a favorite, print out more than one copy of the story.

Step 2: Only put out about 10 pages, to fit your kid’s needs at the station.

Step 3: Students pick out a story of interest.

Step 4: If the bottom of the page says “5 pages +Title Page”, then the student will take 5 pieces of blank paper and one more for the title page. (6 pages total) I set it up this way so students realize they have to make a title page.

Step 5: Students will either staple, tape, or cut and fold pages to make a blank book. I let my class use whole copy paper, but you can cut yours in half if you want to save paper.

Once students have the book together, they decorate the title page with a fancy title and add their name as the author and/or illustrator.

Then, the number 1. line is the sentence they write on PAGE 1 and illustrate the sentence (or paragraph for older students). I have them put numbers at the pages, so they remember what page they are on, and it reinforces number skills for the little ones. Students may take the entire center to create just the cover page or they may complete a whole book depending on how they work. When they finish they are to choose another story. It is never-ending.
