Description
This Making Ten Addition Strategy Math Center is an interactive activity designed to help 1st and 2nd graders develop a deeper understanding of addition by using the make-ten strategy! Students will take an equation card and use counters to represent the equation on the provided ten-frame work mat visually.
They’ll add counters to the top ten frame to show the first number and to the bottom ten frame to show the second number. Then, they’ll move counters from the bottom to the top ten frame to make 10, demonstrating the make-ten strategy. Students will write their equation on the work mat with a dry-erase marker, showing the separated second number and completing the equation to reveal the sum.
Finally, students will complete the recording sheet by writing the equation, separating the second number to make 10, and solving the 10+ equation. This hands-on activity is perfect for math centers, small groups, or independent practice. Make learning addition fun and engaging with this effective visual strategy!
