Description
These short vowel emergent readers give beginning readers a simple way to practice short a, e, i, o, and u. Each booklet stays short, so students can finish a page and feel ready for the next one. Picture support sits right beside the text. A question on every page also gives students a reason to look back and reread.
This set is perfect for small groups, literacy centers, and take-home practice. You can print in color or black and white. One sheet prints on both sides and makes two books. Then you cut, staple, and hand them out. Color copies work well as reusable sets. Black-and-white copies are ideal for book bags and home reading.
Each reader focuses on one short vowel, plus a mixed booklet for review. Students meet ten target words in each book. Repeated lines such as “Look at the cab” help them track print. Simple questions such as “Is the cat on the cab?” add expression. Sight words like look, the, is, and at show up again and again. Prepositions such as on, in, and by also appear, so students practice meaning while they decode.
The pages also help you group with purpose. Start with the pre-test. Students read real words and nonsense words. The teacher copy gives you a place to mark errors. If a student needs more support, pull the matching reader. Listen as students read to you or a buddy. Then use the activity page. Students write the word for each picture and can look back in the book. When they are ready, give the post-test and check growth.
These booklets also fit morning work, early finishers, sub plans, and intervention. Laminate a color set and let students circle the target vowel. Send the black-and-white set home so families can listen. Because the text repeats, students can practice again without new prep. In addition, the mixed reader lets you review all five short vowels.
Use these short vowel emergent readers when you want focused phonics practice that still feels friendly and doable.
