Description

Looking for a fun and interactive way to teach vowel sounds? This Long and Short Vowel Sorting Game is just what you need to help your 1st and 2nd graders strengthen their phonics skills through hands-on sorting and writing practice.

Students will look at the picture on each food card and decide if the vowel sound is short or long. Then, they’ll “feed” each card into the correct lunchbox and complete a recording sheet to reinforce what they’ve learned.

What’s Included:
• 2 lunchbox sorting mats (short vowels and long vowels)
• Picture food cards for vowel identification
• Recording sheet for writing and vowel sound sorting
• Simple student-friendly instructions

Ways to Use This Resource:
• Small group phonics games
• Independent literacy stations
• Intervention or RTI support
• Morning tubs or phonics warm-ups
• Review before vowel assessments

How to Use:
• Print and laminate the food cards and lunchboxes
• Students choose a card, say the word, and determine the vowel sound
• Place the card on the matching short or long vowel mat
• On the recording sheet, students write each word in the correct column

This low-prep vowel activity is great for reinforcing phonics in a way that’s engaging and easy to manage all year long!
