What happens when you mix vinegar and baking soda?

Mixing vinegar and baking soda may be something that you really want to do. If this is the case, then get excited! When these two ingredients are mixed together, you get a chemical reaction. The hydrogen ions that are in the hydrogen peroxide and the bicarbonate and sodium ions from the baking soda mix together and create an amazing reaction. The bubbles and foam are created, making it something awesome to watch! 

What is the best ratio of vinegar to baking soda?

Whether you’re cleaning or doing this experiment, you may be wondering what the best ratio is for these two ingredients. The best ration that I have found is a 12:1 ratio of vinegar to baking soda. Keep this in mind whenever you are making something like this, you’ll want to have the right ratios or you’ll really overdo it! 

What is the purpose of a Vinegar and Baking Soda experiment?

One of the main reasons for this experiment is that you get to see a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction doesn’t require much and the ingredients are cheap. Most people have these two ingredients sitting right in their kitchen. You can easily OooHhhhh and AhhhAAhhh your crowd by doing this boiling pots experiment with them.

Boiling Pots – A Baking Soda Experiment

 

Supplies:

1 16oz. box of baking soda

Vinegar

Dropper

Food coloring (green and yellow)

Mini Black cauldron pots

2 Small bowls

Funnel

Tray

Directions:

Fill bowls with ⅓ cup vinegar.

 

Add 10 drops of green food coloring to one bowl, and 10 drops of yellow food coloring to the other bowl. Stir with a dropper.

Using the funnel, add ⅓ cup of baking soda to each pot.

If you have any baking soda remaining, you can fill the pots with more until the box is empty.

Fill the dropper with green vinegar and squirt into one of the pots.

Watch what happens when the vinegar comes in contact with the baking soda!

Repeat this step using the yellow vinegar and a different pot.

Repeat steps until all remaining vinegar is used. Kids can see mix the colors if desired (squirting green into the yellow, or yellow into the green.)

At the end of the activity, if there’s remaining vinegar water left but hard for the dropper to pick up, pour vinegar into a pot from the bowl and watch what happens!
