Martin Luther King Jr. Day Activities
How did MLK day sneak up on me so quickly!? Seriously, the beginning of the year has been quite hectic that I almost forgot about this one! This is one “holiday” I don’t like to just skip over because time got away from us. It’s very important for students learn about MLK Jr. and to celebrate him both in and out of the classroom.
MLK Jr. teaches students life-long, valuable lessons:
- Always be kind
- Non-violence is always better than violence
- Chase after your dreams and don’t give up
- Help others
I’ve been meaning to write a post about Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a while now. I’ve compiled some great resources that you can incorporate into your classroom when teaching about MLK Jr. and I hope you find them useful!
BrainPOP videos are always my go-to. If your school has a subscription, you’ll definitely want to check these videos out. Kid-friendly and kid-approved. I have linked to both the BrainPOP Jr. and BrainPOP videos depending on your audience.
Have you seen the Kid President videos? This little boy does a fabulous job summing up the story of Martin Luther King Jr. Check out his adorable video here.
Leading up to MLK Jr. Day, I like to pull different books to read to my students or have my students read during DEAR time. Some of my favorites include….
The last resource I have for you is my Martin Luther King Jr. Fun Packet. You’ll find tons of great activities for students to complete for morning work, independent centers, or for early finishers!
There are mystery pictures for your students to find and color including this MLK Day page. Students love color by number and it’s a great review of adding within 20.
This timeline would be a perfect activity to assess your students after learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and the important events in his life.

All of these ideas are awesome! I love how each lesson can interest different learners; for example, some like to read, color, or learn about social studies. I also love using BrainPop Jr. to help teach students topics such as MLK!
